How to Clone Your Voice with ElevenLabs (Safely and Step by Step)

A voice clone lets you generate narration in your own voice just by typing. Creators use it to fix mistakes without re-recording, narrate long courses and audiobooks, and publish in other languages while still sounding like themselves.

ElevenLabs offers two types of cloning: Instant Voice Cloning, which works from a short sample in seconds, and Professional Voice Cloning, which trains on a longer recording for higher quality. This guide shows you how to record good samples, create your clone and use it responsibly.

Step-by-step: clone your voice in ElevenLabs

Step 1: Choose Instant or Professional cloning

Start with an Instant clone to test. If you will narrate a lot, invest in a Professional clone.

Step 2: Record clean samples

Record in a quiet, soft-furnished room. Keep the same distance from the microphone, speak naturally and vary your sentences: some calm, some excited, some questions.

Export as an uncompressed or high-quality file (WAV or high-bitrate MP3).

Background noise, music, echo or other people talking will be copied into your clone. Clean audio matters more than length.

Step 3: Start a new voice clone

In ElevenLabs, open the Voices section and choose the option to add or create a new voice, then select Instant Voice Clone or Professional Voice Clone.

Step 4: Upload your samples and name the voice

Upload your recordings (or record directly in the browser), give the voice a clear name such as “Henry – narration”, and add a short description and labels to find it later.

Step 5: Confirm consent and verify

Confirm that you have the rights to the voice. ElevenLabs uses a voice verification step (a “voice captcha”) in which you read a short prompt aloud, to confirm that the person in the samples is present and consenting.

Verification exists to prevent misuse. Cloning someone else’s voice without consent breaks ElevenLabs’ terms and may be illegal where you live.

Step 6: Generate speech with your voice

Once the clone is ready (immediately for Instant, after training for Professional), open text to speech, select your new voice and type or paste your script. Generate a short paragraph first and listen with headphones.

Adjust the stability and similarity settings: more stability sounds steadier, while lower stability sounds more expressive.

Step 7: Fine-tune and download

Fix awkward pronunciations by rewriting words phonetically or adding punctuation for natural pauses. When you are happy, download the audio and use it in your video editor, course platform or podcast.

Sample script to read for your recording

Read a mix like this, naturally and at your normal pace:

  • “Hi, and welcome back. Today I’m going to show you three simple ways to save time every week.”
  • “Have you ever wondered why some videos get millions of views while others don’t?”
  • “The price went up from 29 dollars to 49 dollars in March 2026.”
  • “Honestly, I was surprised. It worked much better than I expected!”
  • “Let’s take a quick look at the results, step by step.”

Using voice clones responsibly

  • Only clone voices you own or have written permission to use.
  • Tell your audience when narration is AI-generated where it matters, such as news or testimonials.
  • Never use a clone to impersonate someone, sign up for services, or bypass voice-based security.
  • Keep your ElevenLabs account secure with a strong password and two-factor authentication.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clone my voice for free on ElevenLabs?

Voice cloning requires a paid ElevenLabs plan. The free plan lets you try text to speech with the default voices.

How much audio do I need to clone my voice?

Instant Voice Cloning can work with under two minutes of varied audio. Professional Voice Cloning recommends about 30 minutes of high-quality recordings.

Can my cloned voice speak other languages?

Yes, ElevenLabs’ multilingual models can generate speech in many languages using your cloned voice, although accent and quality vary by language.

Is it legal to clone a voice?

Cloning your own voice is fine. Cloning someone else’s voice without consent violates ElevenLabs’ terms and may break laws on likeness, fraud or privacy.

Why does my clone sound robotic?

Usually because of noisy or compressed samples, or too little variety. Re-record in a quiet room with consistent mic distance and more expressive sentences.
