How to Track Your Brand in ChatGPT and AI Search (Step-by-Step)

Do ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers recommend your brand when customers ask for options in your category? You cannot see this in Google Search Console or Analytics. An LLM tracker such as Mangools AI Search Watcher answers it by asking AI engines your customers’ questions on a schedule and recording the results.

Best for: Brands and SEOs starting with AI visibility tracking

Starting price: Basic $18.85/month (billed yearly)

Before you start

  • Your brand name plus common spellings (for example “Acme” and “Acme Tools”)
  • Your main website domain, so citations to your pages are recognised
  • 3 to 5 competitor brands
  • A list of 20 to 50 questions customers ask before buying

The process at a glance

  1. Brand
  2. Prompts
  3. Engines
  4. Competitors
  5. Run
  6. Read results
  7. Repeat

Step-by-step: set up tracking

Step 1: Create a free account and start a monitor

Open AI Search Watcher, enter your brand in Enter your brand and click Track my AI visibility. No credit card is needed to start.

Step 2: Review the suggested prompts

The tool suggests prompts related to your brand and category. Keep the ones a real customer would type, such as “best project management tool for small teams”, and delete vague ones.

Step 3: Add your own prompts

Add questions from sales calls, support tickets and keyword research. Mix category questions, comparisons and problem questions. Our prompt selection guide has a template.

Avoid only tracking prompts that include your brand name. They show how AI describes you, not whether it recommends you.

Step 4: Choose the AI engines

Select the engines your customers use. Most brands start with ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Gemini, then add Claude, Grok, Mistral or Llama.

Step 5: Add competitors

Add the brands you lose deals to, so every report shows your visibility next to theirs.

Step 6: Let the prompts run

Each prompt runs multiple times per engine because AI answers vary. Results are averaged, which makes the numbers more reliable than a single manual test.

Step 7: Read your first results

Look at Visibility (share of runs that mention you), Brand Position (where you appear in the answer), Citations (how often your site is linked) and the overall Score. See AI visibility metrics explained.

Step 8: Save your baseline

Note your starting numbers per engine. Every GEO change you make later is measured against this baseline.

What to do with the results

  • Prompts where competitors appear and you do not: create or improve a page that answers that question
  • Engines where you are invisible: check which sources they cite (see finding AI sources)
  • Wrong descriptions of your brand: update your About, pricing and FAQ pages

Frequently asked questions

Can I just ask ChatGPT myself?

You can, but answers change between sessions, locations and models. A tracker repeats each prompt and averages results across engines, which a manual test cannot do reliably.

How many prompts should I track?

Start with 20 to 50 high-intent prompts. Paid Mangools plans include up to 500 prompts.

Wrap-up

Enter your brand, keep realistic prompts, add competitors, choose engines and record your baseline. Then work on the gaps and re-check monthly with our GEO measurement routine.
