Your competitors may already be the default answer in ChatGPT for your category. Competitor tracking in AI search shows who wins which questions, on which engines, and which sources make them visible.

Best for: Teams benchmarking AI visibility against competitors
Starting price: Basic $18.85/month (billed yearly)
Step-by-step: compare competitors
Step 1: Pick 3–5 real competitors
Choose brands you actually lose customers to, plus one category leader. Too many competitors make reports hard to read.
Step 2: Add them to your monitor
In AI Search Watcher, add the competitor brands to the same monitor as your brand, so every prompt is checked for all of them.
Step 3: Use unbranded prompts
Competitor analysis only works on prompts that do not name a brand, such as “best CRM for real estate agents”.
Step 4: Compare visibility by engine
Open the side-by-side report and compare visibility per engine. A competitor may dominate ChatGPT but be weak in Google AI Overviews.
Step 5: Compare positions
Being mentioned fifth in a long list is weaker than being mentioned first. Check average brand position for the prompts that matter most.
Step 6: Study their citations
Look at which pages and sites are cited when competitors appear: their own comparison pages, review sites, listicles or Reddit threads. These are the sources you need to appear in too.
Step 7: Build a gap list
For each prompt where a competitor wins, write one action: create a page, update an existing one, get listed on a cited review site or correct outdated information.
Gap analysis template
| Prompt | Winner | Engines | Cited sources | Our action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| best CRM for real estate agents | Competitor A | ChatGPT, Gemini | Review site X, Competitor A blog | Publish a real estate use-case page; request listing on X |
| Competitor A alternatives | Competitor B | AI Overviews | Listicle Y | Create an honest alternatives page |

Frequently asked questions
Why does AI recommend a smaller competitor over us?
Usually because they are mentioned more often in sources the AI trusts, or because their pages answer the exact question more clearly.
How often should I compare?
Monthly is enough for most brands, plus after major launches or content updates.
Wrap-up
